Program Delivery Model
The Valdry Center for Philanthropy is an academically based research center focused on philanthropic studies and nonprofit management. With no such academic unit at a HBCU, the Valdry Center brings new dimensions to the potential of philanthropic studies and nonprofit management in higher education and for communities of color. The Center will address issues that have historically been left undiscussed in minority communities around the world, and will focus on 3 strands of work.
Degree Program
The Executive Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education with a concentration in Nonprofit Management and Philanthropic Studies is offered by the Nelson Mandela School of Government at Southern University, with support from the Valdry Center for Philanthropy.
Now serving its sixth cohort, the program has already graduated three cohorts of accomplished professionals and continues to attract leaders from across the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.
While the Valdry Center does not grant degrees independently, it supports the Ph.D. program through thought leadership, co-curricular engagement, and efforts to strengthen a culture of philanthropy across the Southern University System.
Research
The Valdry Center for Philanthropy is committed to advancing research that elevates the understanding and impact of African American philanthropy. In 2025, the Center presented its first original studies at the AFP ICON Conference, the world’s largest gathering of fundraising professionals.
These groundbreaking studies explore how African American communities are shaping the future of philanthropy—examining themes such as collective giving, support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and community responses to urgent social issues.
Informed in part by insights from the Center’s 2024–2025 Seminar Series, this research represents a major step forward in the Valdry Center’s mission to inform and empower philanthropic leadership. Moving ahead, the Center plans to publish new research annually, contributing meaningfully to both academic scholarship and sector practice.
Seminars and Certificates
The Valdry Center for Philanthropy hosts a signature seminar series, bringing in four distinguished speakers each year to share insights on philanthropy, nonprofit leadership, social innovation, and equity. These events are free and open to the public, offering valuable opportunities for learning, discussion, and community engagement.
Developed through a completed feasibility study and guided by input from key stakeholders, the seminar series is designed to reflect the interests and needs of the communities we serve.
While the degree program supports student matriculation, future certificate programs will be designed for working professionals seeking to deepen or diversify their skills. As the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors continue to evolve—with emerging trends such as impact investing and cross-sector collaboration—these educational offerings will help expand leadership capacity and foster innovation.
